Lithium ore processing circuits run non-stop day and night. Even a short pump shutdown can halt the whole production line and cause massive economic losses. Unlike intermittent mining applications, 24/7 lithium production requires engineers to evaluate every critical specification of the lithium processing slurry pump before installation. Many plant failures happen because operators only focus on nominal flow and head, ignoring long-term wear, cavitation risk and material compatibility under continuous slurry loading.
Spodumene leaching, cyclone feeding and thickener underflow transfer all rely on stable slurry transportation. In these circuits, slurry contains sharp silicate particles and acidic/alkaline chemical reagents. The pump will face continuous abrasion and corrosion. A standard slurry pump suitable for batch operation may suffer rapid wear of wet parts after hundreds of hours of non-stop running.
For continuous lithium plants, pump selection is not only about matching one-time duty points. It requires evaluating parameters that guarantee stable performance over thousands of operating hours.

Flow rate is the volumetric slurry volume the pump needs to deliver to maintain the plant’s designed throughput. For 24/7 lithium circuits, engineers should reserve a 10–15% safety margin to accommodate fluctuations in ore feed. Over-sizing the pump by too much will force the unit to operate far from its best efficiency point (BEP), accelerating impeller and liner wear.
Total Dynamic Head (TDH) combines static lift, pipe friction loss, valve and elbow losses. When calculating TDH for slurry, you must apply slurry correction factors, since dense solids will increase friction and reduce actual pump head compared to clean water performance curves.
【Table 1: Key flow & head reference for lithium processing slurry pump】
| Parameter | Design Requirement for 24/7 Lithium Circuit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rated Flow | Q design +10~15% margin | Avoid long-term operation below 60% BEP |
| TDH | Static head + all friction losses | Recalculate TDH when slurry SG changes |
| Operating BEP range | 70% –100% of best efficiency point | Minimize vibration and wear for continuous duty |
Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) is one of the most overlooked parameters for continuous lithium processing. Cavitation generates high-pressure shock waves that erode impeller surfaces rapidly. For 24/7 operation, NPSHa (available) must exceed NPSHr (required) by at least 1.5 m, much higher than the margin for intermittent pumps. Sudden cavitation damage will force unexpected shutdown in a non-stop lithium plant.
Slurry physical properties directly determine the wear rate of the heavy duty slurry pump. Lithium spodumene slurry usually has fine to medium sharp particles.
Solids weight concentration: typically 20% ~40% for cyclone feed and leaching circuits
Particle size: mostly below 2mm, with occasional oversize tramp particles
pH: varies from weak acid to alkaline in different leaching stages
Combined abrasion and corrosion is the biggest wear driver. If the pump wet end material cannot resist both chemical attack and particle impact, components will fail quickly under round-the-clock operation.
Wet parts including impeller, throatbush and liner are the core consumables of the slurry pump. High chrome alloy, rubber and SiC ceramic are three common options for lithium processing.
High chrome alloy: good impact resistance for coarse particles
Rubber liner: excellent for fine abrasive slurry within compatible pH range
SiC ceramic: superior anti-abrasion for fine, high concentration lithium slurry, extending service life greatly
Material selection must match slurry pH and particle hardness, which directly decides maintenance cycles in continuous operation.
Continuous-duty IE high-efficiency motor and VFD drive are recommended. VFD allows adjustable speed when plant throughput fluctuates, avoiding throttling loss and reducing mechanical shock to pump components. The motor service factor should be 1.15 or higher to handle peak slurry density during process variation.
Even with perfect static parameters, real-time monitoring is necessary. Vibration, bearing temperature, discharge pressure and power draw are key indicators. IIoT sensors can track these data continuously, predicting wear part replacement before failure, and eliminating unplanned downtime.
Before confirming a pump model for 24/7 lithium operation, verify these items:
Flow and TDH with proper slurry correction and safety margin
Sufficient NPSH margin to prevent cavitation
Wet end material compatible with slurry pH, particle size and SG
Continuous-rated motor and drive system
Vibration and temperature monitoring capability
